COSHH Assessment — Asbestos (Chrysotile / Amosite / Crocidolite)

This pre-completed COSHH assessment covers asbestos fibres — chrysotile (white), amosite (brown) and crocidolite (blue) — which may be present in insulation, textured coatings, floor tiles and other legacy building materials. All asbestos types are Group 1 human carcinogens. Work with asbestos is governed by the Control of Asbestos Regulations 2012.

What Does This COSHH Assessment Cover?

The assessment is fully completed and ready to use, covering all sections required for a complete hazardous substance risk assessment:

  • Substance identification — trade name, fibre types (chrysotile, amosite, crocidolite), SDS reference and physical state
  • Health effects and first aid — inhalation causing asbestosis, mesothelioma and lung cancer (all typically fatal, latency 20–40 years); ingestion, skin and eye contact hazards; specific first aid for each route
  • Fatal carcinogen — no safe exposure level — there is no safe level of asbestos fibre exposure; all three diseases are irreversible and often fatal; medical monitoring and RIDDOR reporting may be required after significant exposure
  • Workplace exposure limits — TWA 1.0 fibre/cm³ over 8 hours; STEL 3.0 fibres/cm³; these are maximum legal limits — exposure must be reduced as far below these as reasonably practicable
  • CLP hazard classification — Toxic and Long-term health hazard pictograms
  • PPE requirements — including disposable coveralls (Type 5/6), FFP3 half-mask or full-face respirator, gloves and decontamination before leaving the work area
  • Emergency procedures — controlled area, HEPA vacuuming and decontamination procedures

Who Is This COSHH Assessment For?

This assessment is suitable for any workplace where asbestos-containing materials may be encountered, including:

  • Demolition and refurbishment contractors
  • Licensed asbestos removal contractors
  • Building surveyors and asbestos management duty holders
  • Facilities managers in buildings constructed before 2000
  • Maintenance workers who may disturb asbestos-containing materials
